Barbara Simon

What is your preferred medium, and what factors influenced you in that direction?

I began my path toward a career as an artist with a weaving class in 1973. My medium has always been some form of fiber combined with various surface design techniques. There is an intimacy working with threads and textiles. Fiber art has a history and yet is an evolving excellent media for self expression.

This piece is done in the technique of collage, which involves layering and pasting or fusing separate elements to create a whole. My inspiration comes from the beauty and patters in nature. Creating this work helped me through an emotional time, a personal 'Dark Passage'.

What
do you see as being Art Saint Louis’s most important role in the community?

In my opinion, the most important role of Art Saint Louis in the community is to give emerging as well as established artists a frequent opportunity to exhibit their work. Artists respond to this because it provides an excellent and well managed gallery space and a nice opening reception. The exhibits are juried by experienced jurors both local and national, which encourages the artists to enter and the community to attend. All of these reasons help to develop a community interest in the arts.
